The November 2024 issue of Chiropractic Economics highlights the remarkable success of Zimmer MedizinSystems’ non-invasive emFieldPro HEIT™ and enPuls ESWT devices in treating arthrogenic muscular inhibition (AMI) and patella baja, preventing the need for above-knee amputation. Written by Rod Tomczak, MD, DPM, EdD, this updated case study expands on a previously published version, now including x-rays and additional details.
The case study follows a 75-year-old male patient who, after multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy with minimal results, faced amputation as a last resort. This otherwise healthy patient was reliant on a wheelchair for mobility and experienced little to no improvement after attending 258 physical therapy appointments over three years.
Tomczak’s approach utilized Zimmer MedizinSystems’ emFieldPro HEIT for targeted stimulation of the quadriceps muscle, specifically the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO), achieving significant muscle hypertrophy and a 50% strength gain over four months. He explains that HEIT (High Energy Inductive Therapy) used electromagnetic fields to stimulate deep muscle tissue, promoting cellular regeneration and increasing muscle strength. Coupled with enPuls ESWT (Radial Pulse Shockwave Therapy), which facilitates tissue healing and helped reposition the patella, the patient experienced unprecedented improvements, including a substantial increase in knee extension and a significant reduction in muscle atrophy.
The article explains that ESWT delivers “shockwaves to induce microtrauma, promoting neovascularization and healing through the recruitment of stem cells and the release of growth factors. ESWT improves skin elasticity, increases collagen production and breaks up fibrous bands, releasing tissue.”
This combined treatment not only led to superior results compared to traditional therapy but also provided a non-surgical alternative to amputation, reinforcing the effectiveness of Zimmer MedizinSystems’ devices in complex musculoskeletal rehabilitation.
