Z Wave for Scar Tissue, Lymphedema, Cellulite & More

With a background spanning over two decades in massage therapy and Reiki healing, Licensed Massage Therapist, Diane Whigham of DW Massage & Wellness brings deep experience—and hands-on results—to her integrative approach. After practicing for 8 years in Salem, Massachusetts, Diane relocated to Missouri, where she now offers treatment independently out of Harrisonville Massage & Wellness.

At the heart of her evolving toolkit is the Z Wave Pro radial pulse shockwave device from Zimmer MedizinSystems.

“I absolutely love the Zimmer [MedizinSystems device],” she says in her feature video. “The Z Wave has been a game changer for me and my clients. I’ve used it anywhere from plantar fasciitis, arthritis, bursitis, neuropathy… breast cancer survivors…”

Diane uses the Z Wave in combination with massage therapy, cupping, and energy work to help address post-surgical scar tissue, stagnant lymph flow, cellulite, and postpartum tissue concerns. The synergy between modalities has helped unlock faster, deeper relief for her clients—some of whom have seen dramatic results in just a few treatments.

“It moves lymph, it helps blood flow, it helps circulation. It just gets stuck stuff moving,” she explains. “I’ve also used it for hip replacements, knee replacements—really breaking up the scar tissue, getting that gunk to move so I can really work on the muscles that need to be treated.”

One powerful aspect of Diane’s work is how she blends clinical insight with personal experience. In the video, she appears on camera receiving a Z Wave session herself:

“I am here for some soft tissue healing after having a baby. I had a C-section, so I have a lot of soft tissue that they’re working on.”

She often uses Z Wave therapy prior to hands-on bodywork to help “open the floodgates”—preparing tissues for deeper therapeutic access. “I just can’t get past those deeper muscles – or the tissue is so gunked up,” Diane says. “That’s where the [Z Wave] comes in… it penetrates deep to get everything moving—circulation, blood flow, everything—so then the body can start to heal again.”

Her patient results are compelling. In one case, a client with severe post-mastectomy lymphedema lost four inches in arm circumference after just two sessions. In another, a mother of four undergoing treatment for C-section scarring and cellulite saw visible improvement after three 1.5-hour combination sessions.

From surgical recovery and scar release to postpartum healing and lymphedema support, Diane continues to expand how Z Wave fits into her therapeutic philosophy. “The amount of relief I’ve given people is incredible,” she says. “I’ve never seen a machine work so well and have such fast results.”

A to Z News  Exclusive Interview with Diane Whigham of DW Massage & Wellness

A to Z News: Diane, many of our readers saw the video you shared with us and on social media, and were inspired by the range of patients you’re helping. Can you share more about the types of clients who benefit most from Z Wave in your practice?

DW: Absolutely. I’ve used the Z Wave for everything from post-surgical scars to severe lymphedema, hip and knee replacement recovery, and even cellulite and postpartum concerns. One story that stands out is a client we’ll call Marlene—she’s a breast cancer survivor who had two rounds of treatment and a double mastectomy, with surgical incisions that were different on each side. She also had lymphedema in her rib, armpit, and arm. I had worked with her for several years before I got the Z Wave. Once I added it to her care, the changes were incredible. She could move better, breathe more deeply, and even fit into her clothes differently. Her arms stopped throbbing from fluid buildup. We saw visible improvement in a scar along her rib which went down by two inches. I typically used stage two cellulite settings, adjusting between 110–120 and dialing the pulse rate down to 9 in more tender, bony areas.

A to Z News: Another of your patient stories really stood out to us—Monica, right?

DW: Yes, we’ll call her Monica for this interview—she had been through so much. She had a double mastectomy, and the surgeons performed a flap reconstruction using abdominal tissue, which required a long incision across her stomach. When I met her, she was seeing an OT but still struggling with swelling and pain. Her arm was 18 inches around from fluid retention. After her first Z Wave session, she felt immediate relief and could move more freely. After just two treatments, her arm measured four inches smaller. She cried—it was that emotional.

A to Z News: That’s incredible. How do you tailor your Z Wave treatments to each patient?

DW: It depends on the person’s tolerance and where the scar tissue or fluid buildup is. I adjust the frequency and pulse rate depending on tenderness, especially around bony or sensitive areas. I’ll often follow Z Wave with massage to move the fluid toward the heart to flush out of the system. That combination has been a huge success.

A to Z News: You also work with patients recovering from childbirth, right?

DW: Yes! Sophia is a great example. (Pictures at right.) She’s a mom of four with multiple C-sections. We’ve been treating cellulite and scar tissue on her stomach, thighs, glutes, and scar areas. I use Z Wave for about 15–20 minutes per side before massage, applying it in four sets to areas like the inner and outer groin, glutes, stomach, incision sites, and anywhere that’s being impinged. After three sessions of Z Wave followed by massage, she had visible improvements in skin tone and texture, and her incisions were loosening. She was thrilled.

A to Z News: You mentioned you even use the Z Wave on yourself.

DW: I do! After having a C-section myself, I had a lot of soft tissue that needed work— areas that felt tight, restricted, or just not moving right. The Z Wave helped address the scar tissue and improve circulation. I trust the technology enough to use it on my own body. That says a lot.

A to Z News: And what about Cara? Her case stood out to us because of how significantly her mobility improved.

DW: Definitely. Cara (Pictures below.) had two hip replacements and a knee replacement, and one of her hip surgeries involved a fractured femur they didn’t catch at first. By the time she came to me, she had intense fluid buildup in her midsection and legs—her ankles had multiple folds from swelling. She also had visible cottage cheese-like cellulite and heavy restriction in her range of motion. She could barely walk for five minutes.

We worked intensely around her surgical incisions to break up scar tissue and get the lymph moving. I used Z Wave settings between 8 and 14 depending on tenderness—usually starting around the hips and groin, then moving to the knees, front and back of the legs, and ankles. After the first week, she lost five pounds of retained fluid. After about six weeks, she was down a pant size, her ankles were back to normal, and she was walking every day—eventually even using the elliptical again. These were activities that she hadn’t been able to do for years prior! That was huge for her.

A to Z News: That’s such a wide range of patient outcomes—from chronic pain relief to post-op recovery and postpartum healing. What would you say to other practitioners considering Z Wave?

DW: It’s the best investment I’ve made for my clients and for my bodywork practice. It helps me reach areas I just can’t access with my hands alone. The results are real.

About Z Wave by Zimmer MedizinSystems

The Z Wave by Zimmer MedizinSystems transmits powerful sound waves into the tissue. The energy then spreads out radially to enhance the treatment effect (Radial Pulse Therapy). The body responds to these sound waves with increased metabolic activity in the form of lymphatic drainage and increased blood circulation. This results in a reduction of the appearance of cellulite, for which Z Wave is FDA-cleared. Additionally, studies and practitioners have found that Z Wave enables improved results when used with other body contouring procedures and devices. Z Wave was shown to accelerate tattoo clearance when used in conjunction with laser tattoo removal treatments. For more information about the Z Wave, visit a web overview of the product.
